A law firm has developed a policy to protect fleets from falling foul of data protection and privacy laws when using telematics and other vehicle tracking systems.
Aaron & Partners LLP claims many employers are unaware they have to tell staff their vehicle is being monitored. Failing to do so can lead to legal action.
Recently, the Information Commissioner has experienced a rise in the number of complaints relating to the monitoring of workers.
Vehicle tracking is popular with companies and allows firms to gather important data relating to efficiency and road safety. However, a policy must be in place to protect against potential claims relating to monitoring, privacy and handling of personal data.
Catherine Kerr, an employment specialist at Aaron & Partners LLP involved in developing the policy, commented: "As it is not a legal obligation for an employer to install vehicle tracking systems, it is even more important for employers to have a policy in this regard.
"We envisage these policies becoming standard for all such companies in the near future."
