Published on Monday 7th October, by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute, the “Stuck in Traffic” project concluded that TomTom’s iPhone Navigation App and GO 2525 Portable Navigation Device provided the most accurate real-time traffic data.
The study included comparisons on how well units reported on traffic jams on surface streets and highways.
The TomTom devices were compared with six popular mobile apps and GPS devices, in a bid to find which devices were the most accurate in reporting traffic congestion and incident data. The TomTom devices won out, by scoring the highest scores in identifying the most jams and having the lowest error rate compared to the other devices being tested.
Bruce M. Belzowski, the Assistant Research Scientist on the project described how the project worked.
He said, “by driving through the same traffic jams with each device simultaneously, our study identified the accuracy of each GPS system in reporting congestion, with varying results across the board.”
Mr. Belzowski and co. discovered following the experiment that “TomTom’s device and app reported the most accurate traffic information.”
Some of the other devices and apps which were tested, included Google (which reported 58% of jams accurately) Inrix (38%) and Garmin (22% and 4% respectively). The TomTom GO 2525 Portable Navigation Device reported 67% of jams accurately, whilst the TomTom iPhone Navigation App was able to record jams with 66% accuracy.
TomTom also achieved the highest accuracy rates when looking at traffic jams on highways. The devices reported 86% of large highway jams accurately and did not miss any of the measured jams in the large highway jams category.
Obviously, the guys over at TomTom are delighted to have come out on top! Charles Cautley, the Managing Director of TomTom, said, “the findings from (the study) clearly show that TomTom Traffic devices provide drivers with more precise traffic information, enabling faster journeys, more accurate arrival times, and an overall smarter navigation experience.”
