But with the right technology, you can ensure that speeding becomes a thing of the past!
According to the road safety organisation Think!, 3,267 people were killed or injured in crashes where speed was a factor in 2011 alone. Speeding increases the chances of a fatal accident, but it also increase the wear and tear on a vehicle. If caught speeding, your drivers could also be subject to large fines. Fleet News claim that last year 48,000 drivers were summoned to court for speeding.
Clearly, this is a major issue affecting Britain’s road users. But how can you prevent it from happening in your fleet vehicles?
The answer is to utilise technology as part of a coherent strategy to decrease speeding and improve your fleet’s driving behaviour.
According to the article in Fleet News, many fleet managers are unaware that their drivers are engaged in speeding. In fact 26% of fleet managers, when asked, admitted that they did not know how many collisions involving one of their vehicles had been caused by breaking the speed limit.
Telematics can help fleet managers keep tabs on what’s happening with their drivers, in their vehicles, and provide a huge amount of data to show which drivers are breaking the speed limit and which ones are driving under.
Telematics have been shown to work in several different companies. Because they are being monitored, many drivers are more observant of the rules of the road, and therefore speed less. Not only does this lessen the chances of a potentially dangerous accident, it could reduce vehicle damage and save as much as 15% on fuel costs.
GreenRoad, a fleet management company which uses telematics, claim that accidents related to speeding had reduced by 50-70% when telematics were installed in fleet vehicles. Sales Director, Andy Cozens told Fleet News, when “drivers keep their speeds moderate, they reduce fuel consumption as well as reducing risk.”
This means “fewer crashes…less time lost to employee injury, less paperwork, fewer vehicles off the road for repair, less wear and tear and an effective way to combat the ever-increasing cost of insurance premiums.”
TomTom products can help to reduce your speeding, particularly the TomTom WEBFLEET.
WEBFLEET allows managers to communicate directly with drivers whilst they’re out on the road, and monitor their driver behaviour. This is then transmitted back to a desktop PC, where managers can process data and act accordingly.
Not only does it reduce speeding, but it also makes your business more efficient. And you can manage your entire fleet from the comfort of your own desk!
